[REMINDER] PHP 5.2 End-of-life
Just a reminder that as previously stated, PHP 5.2 is being removed and you need to ensure your sites are compatible with 5.3. If your site is not compatible with 5.3 it may break.
It's been nearly 8 months since we upgraded to 5.3 for our primary PHP install and the end of active support for PHP 5.2 from the PHP community was announced back in July 2010. Since then a small number of patches have been applied to resolve security issues. The final 5.2 release (5.2.17) was released on the 6th of January 2011, since then 5.3 has received many updates and the first stable versions of 5.4 have been released.
As noted in the initial announcement, we cannot support 5.2 in the long term due to the security implications for our servers - while a number of competitors have already dropped 5.2 entirely, we understand that updating your website isn't a simple thing that can happen overnight.
Our current timeline for the complete removal of 5.2 is towards the end of this year, a year since we migrated the servers to run 5.3 as the primary version. With that said, any serious exploits (zero day or otherwise) would accelerate this timeline significantly to the point that it may be removed without notice.
A few weeks before removal, we will provide the exact times for the maintenance windows. A rough overview of the changes are as follows:
* Removal of the cPanel PHP Manager plugin
* Updating of all htaccess files to point to the 5.3 php stack
* Removal of the 5.2 stack * Restart of apache to remove the file handlers
This will take a considerable amount of time for each server as every site will have to be checked to see if it is running on the 5.2 stack. The impact should be minimal, but if your website isn't 5.3 compatible you may have issues such as warnings or blank/error pages.
